exchange for a premium, and can be thought of as a guaranteed and known small loss to prevent a large, possibly devastating loss. An insurer is a company selling the insurance; an insured or policyholder is the person or entity buying the insurance. The insurance rate is a factor used to determine the amount to be charged for a certain amount of insurance coverage, called the premium. Risk management, the practice of appraising and controlling risk, has evolved as a discrete field of study and practice.
Commercially insurable risks typically share seven common characteristics.
1.A large number of homogeneous exposure units. The vast majority of insurance policies are provided for individual members of very large classes. Automobile insurance, for example, covered about 175 million automobiles in the United States in 2004
[2] The existence of a large number of homogeneous exposure units allows insurers to benefit from the so-called “law of large numbers,” which in effect states that as the number of exposure units increases, proportionally the actual results are increasingly likely to become close to expected proportions. There are exceptions to this criterion. Lloyd's of London is famous for insuring the life or health of actors, actresses and sports figures. Satellite Launch insurance covers events that are infrequent. Large commercial property policies may insure exceptional properties for which there are no ‘homogeneous’ exposure units. Despite failing on this criterion, many exposures like these are generally considered to be insurable.
2.Definite Loss. The event that gives rise to the loss that is subject to the
insured, at least in principle, take place at a known time, in a known place, and from a known cause. The classic example is death of an insured person on a life insurance policy. Fire, automobile accidents, and worker injuries may all easily meet this criterion. Other types of losses may only be definite in theory. Occupational disease, for instance, may involve prolonged exposure to injurious conditions where no specific time, place or cause is identifiable.
Ideally, the time, place and cause of a loss should be clear enough that a
reasonable person, with sufficient information, could objectively verify all three elements.
3.Accidental Loss. The event that constitutes the trigger of a claim should be fortuitous, or at least outside the control of the beneficiary of the insurance. The loss should be ‘pure,’ in the sense that it results from an event for which there is only the opportunity for cost. Events that contain speculative
elements, such as ordinary business risks, are generally not considered insurable.
4.Large Loss. The size of the loss must be meaningful from the perspective of the insured. Insurance premiums need to cover both the expected cost of losses, plus the cost of issuing and administering the policy, adjusting losses, and supplying the capital needed to reasonably assure that the insurer will be able to pay claims. For small losses these latter costs may be several times the size of the expected cost of losses. There is little point in paying such costs unless the protection offered has real value to a buyer.
5.Affordable Premium. If the likelihood of an insured event is so high, or the cost of the event so large, that the resulting premium is large relative to the amount of protection offered, it is not likely that anyone will buy insurance, even if on offer. Further, as the accounting profession formally recognizes in financial accounting standards, the premium cannot be so large that there is not a reasonable chance of a significant loss to the insurer. If there is no such chance of loss, the transaction may have the form of insurance, but not the substance.
6.Calculable Loss. There are two elements that must be at least estimable, if not formally calculable: the probability of loss, and the attendant cost.
Probability of loss is generally an empirical exercise, while cost has more to do with the ability of a reasonable person in possession of a copy of the
insurance policy and a proof of loss associated with a claim presented under that policy to make a reasonably definite and objective evaluation of the amount of the loss recoverable as a result of the claim.
7.Limited risk of catastrophically large losses. The essential risk is often
aggregation. If the same event can cause losses to numerous policyholders of the same insurer, the ability of that insurer to issue policies becomes constrained, not by factors surrounding the individual characteristics of a policyholder, but by the factors surrounding the sum of all policyholders
exposed. Typically, insurers prefer to limit their exposure to a loss from a
single event to some small portion of their capital base, on the order of 5
percent. Where the loss can be aggregated, or an individual policy could produce exceptionally large claims, the capital constraint will restrict an insurer's appetite for additional policyholders. The classic example is earthquake insurance, where the ability of an underwriter to issue a new policy depends on the number and size of the policies that it has already underwritten. Wind insurance in hurricane zones, particularly along coast lines, is another example of this phenomenon. In extreme cases, the aggregation can affect the entire industry, since the combined capital of insurers and reinsurers can be small compared to the needs of potential policyholders in areas exposed to aggregation risk. In commercial fire insurance it is possible to find single properties whose total exposed value is well in excess of any individual insurer’s capital constraint. Such properties are generally shared among several insurers, or are insured by a single insurer who syndicates the risk into the reinsurance market.

It’s because, in order to play the piano successfully, you must take the time to learn how to the instrument works, and then spend many hours practicing.Meditation is not a practice that will “work” the first time you try it. It took you awhile to learn how to ride a bike. You probably couldn’t catch a ball the first time you tried. Most likely, your first few meditation sessions won’t be very successful either. Instead of giving up, read some literature on meditation, research the subject on websites, and try to practice once a day for a month. Your local library probably has some meditation audio recordings or videos that you can borrow. Try a variety of meditations to find an approach that works well for you. With a bit of effort, you will get results from your meditation sessions.

Try to do so without judgment, and without trying to come to any conclusions. Just ponder the issue and practice acceptance for what it is at this moment. Then ask yourself, "What would be the best course of action for me at this time?" Consider the possibilities before you, and think about how each one makes you feel. Most often, you will notice a difference between something that feels right, and something that feels wrong.4) Let the Solution Materialize - if you don't recieve any insights initially, put the issue aside for awhile. By going through this process, you've already tapped into your inner guidance and asked for help. Even if the answer doesn't appear immediately, it will eventually. And in my experience, it doesn't take long! Just make an effort to stay open to the answer when it arrives. It will usually arrive in a flash of inspiration or insight that makes you say, "Ah ha!" Or perhaps it will be more along the lines of a subtle gut feeling, where you just know that one particular course of action "feels" right.5) Act from the Heart - once you know what you need to do, act with confidence. Stress is a serious business. The subject is often in the news: we know that it causes the loss of more working days than physical illness and can lead to serious conditions of the heart and other organs. Stress is taken so seriously these days that employers have a legal duty of care towards their employees.The media put far less emphasis on the natural antidote to stress: relaxation. It might be useful to remind ourselves what relaxation actually means. Far from merely being the absence of tension, relaxing actually requires a positive act of will. Just as a composer writes rests - indicating silence - as carefully as the notes played by musicians, so we need to decide when to relax and how to do so. Just think of the expression 'To compose yourself'.Techniques that helpWe know of many techniques and disciplines, some of them very ancient, that help us to relax. Meditation has been described as 'Increasing the distance between thoughts', a way of emptying the mind of its usual chatter, regret, worry and aspiration. Yoga can help us to achieve a similar inner calm through focusing on the body and how it breathes. In both cases, the emphasis is actively on focusing our attention on the here and now, rather than reflecting on the past or thinking ahead.As with any other conscious decision, we need to focus on what we are doing if we want to succeed - and here, for many of us, lies the difficulty. If we want to benefit from these disciplines, not only do we need to endure the slow process of learning new techniques that feel strange and unfamiliar before enjoying the benefits, we also have to overcome an instinctive objection from our own bodies.What tension doesThe trouble is that when we are experiencing stress we become tense: our muscles tighten and adrenaline and cortisol flow through our systems, making it even harder to relax. How can we actively choose to relax easily and effectively? William Congreve wrote ‘Music hath charms to soothe the savage breast, to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak.’ and throughout history gentle music has been a favourite way to change the way we feel. This is because the vibrations that reach our ears do more than just please us as they cause our own internal rhythms, like heartbeat and brain activity, to synchronise with the music.If you have ever tried turning off the sound track of a scary movie you know how flat it can seem with only pictures to keep the mood going. Anyone who has seen what happens to baby boomers at a party when someone plays a Rolling Stones record has experienced the power of music to move people.Type of music that relaxesNaturally, the result depends on the type of music being played. A growing number of composers are choosing to focus mainly on the effect their music has on the listener. In the 1960s a series of 'mood music' albums appeared, followed in the 1970s by British artist Brian Eno's invention of the term 'ambient music' to describe the subtle, mood-invoking albums he created. The emphasis in this type of music is on the listener, not the artist ~ a very different approach from most productions. My own experience is relevant here as I spent more than twenty five years doing my best to capture the audience's attention as a session musician, performer and bandleader before getting involved with hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming as a way of helping people to live the kind of lives they really want.New roleIt was while exploring how to combine music with these ways of helping people that I realised the difference in emphasis: in my new musical role I was no longer centre stage ~ in fact, if the listener was aware of me then I wasn't doing my job. It surprised me how much more difficult it can be to produce music so subtle that the listener is largely unaware of it, yet so effective that it relaxes him or her every time.Self treatmentAs I researched what had already been done I found a fascinating range of different techniques, all contributing to the power of gentle music to soothe and calm us. These approaches can be combined to create truly effective musical solutions to the everyday problems caused by stress. This kind of self-treatment is a welcome alternative to pharmaceuticals, being very effective and extremely safe. Some hospitals have found that when they play the right kind of music their pain-killing medication bill goes down, in some cases to half its former level.In the 1960s, a popular idea was that music could change the world. For us as individuals, that now seems to be true – at least on a personal level.

GEOGRAPHY
I. Introducing Geography: Geography is the study of the evolving character and
organization of the Earth’s surface. It is about how, why, and where human and
natural activities occur and how these activities are interconnected. The two sides of
geography include:
1. Regional geography is concerned with how the Earth’s surface is differentiated into unique places.
2. Systematic geography is concerned with the processes that differentiate places in
time and space.

I. The Four Great Realms: The natural systems encountered in physical geography
operate within the four great realms, or spheres, of the Earth. These are the
atmosphere; the lithosphere, the hydrosphere, and the biosphere.
Atmosphere - The gaseous layer that surrounds the Earth. It receives heat and moisture
from the surface and redistributes them, returning some heat and all of the moisture to
the surface. It supplies vital elements needed to sustain life forms.
Lithosphere - This outermost solid layer of the Earth provides a platform for most lifeforms.
The solid bedrock bears a shallow layer of soil in which nutrient elements
become available to organisms. The surface of the lithosphere is sculpted into
landforms which provide varied habitats for plants, animals, and humans.
Hydrosphere - The liquid realm of the Earth is principally the mass of water in the
world’s oceans. It also includes solid ice in mountain and continental glaciers. Water
occurs as a gaseous vapour, liquid droplets, and solid ice crystals. In the lithosphere,
water is found in the uppermoSt layers in soils and in ground water reservoirs.
Biosphere - Most of the biosphere is contained in the shallow surface zone called the
life layer. It includes the surface of the lands and the upper 100 meters of the ocean.
On land, the life layer is the zone of interactions among the biosphere, lithosphere, and
atmosphere.
II. Scales in Physical Geography: The processes of the life layer and the four great
realms operate on various scales. These scales range from global to individual scales.
Global scale - The sun is the power source that powers most of the phenomena that
occurs within the life layer. At this scale, Earth-sun relationships are very important.
Continental scale - The sun’s energy is not evenly absorbed by the Earth’s land and
water surface. Unequal solar heating produces currents of air and water and
constitute the global atmospheric and oceanic circulation system.
Regional scale - This smaller scale observes the cloud patterns of weather systems,
and their regular movements over time. These movements, along with solar control
of surface temperature, form the basis of the climates of the world.
Local scale - Factors at this scale are important in determining the exact patterns of
vegetation and soils.
Individual scale - Individual landforms and their associated plant and animal
communities are produced by unique activities of wind or water, and develop
distinctive biological communities and soil properties.
III. Systems in Physical Geography: A helpful way to understand the relationships
among the four realms and the life-layer is to study them as systems.
A. Flow systems - This is a system in which matter, energy, or both, move from one
location to another.
1. Pathways: The structure of a flow system that allows for movement.
2. Structure: The pattern of pathways and their interconnections.
3. Inputs and outputs: Flow systems may have matter, energy, or both entering
and leaving the system.
4. Power source: Each flow system needs some type of power source. Natural
systems are powered largely or completely by natural power sources.
Examples of flow systems in physical geography are river systems, a food chain
in an ecosystem, and the global energy balance system.
B. Open and Closed Flow Systems
1. Open Flow System - This is a flow system where there are inputs and outputs
of matter and energy.
2. Closed Flow System - This is a flow system with no input or output flows of
matter. The flow of materials in the system moves endlessly in a series of
interconnected paths or loops. This is also known as a cycle, or a material
cycle. Any global material flow system must be closed, since only a minute
amount of matter flows from Earth to space or from space to the Earth. The
global carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen cycles are all closed matter flow systems.
Energy flow systems are always open. All objects that are warmer than the
depths of space emit radiant energy, and some fraction of that energy
ultimately leaves the Earth.
C. Feedback and Equilibrium in Flow Systems
1. Feedback - Occurs when the flow in one pathway acts to either reduce or to
increase the flow in another pathway.
a. Positive feedback- Where the feedback reinforces the flow of matter or
energy in the system.
b. Negative feedback - Where the feedback reduces the flow of matter or
energy in the system.
2. Equilibrium- This is a steady state in which the flow rates in the various
pathways of a system remain about the same.
D. Time Cycles - Any system can undergo a change in the rates of flow energy or matter
within its pathways. Flow rates may grow faster or may slow down. These
changes in activity can be reversed at intervals of time – that is, a rate can
alternately speed up and slow down during a time cycle. In many natural systems,
there is a rhythm of increasing and decreasing flow. The annual revolution of the
Earth around the Sun generates a time cycle of energy flow in many natural
systems.
